Jared Vicks kept a paranoid eye on the road ahead, consumed watching to notice his mare left black hoofprints in the dust. A glint of a gun barrel or twitch of a head dropping below a gulch consumed his focus. His mare coughed, a wet gurgling sound before staggering to its left.

Jerked from his watch, Jared glanced down to see Banshee’s forelegs trembling. Patting her on the neck, he muttered a refreshing charm, fingers brushing along her neck, the bumps and ridges of her spine raised out through her thin hide like nails on a coffin.

“Not much further, girl. Then you can rest. You can get a bit further.”

Cresting a small dusty rise, Jared caught the first sight of Ash Hollow. His head hurt, his thick, dry tongue rasped over his cracked lips while his eyes roamed over the clusters of warped silhouettes painted black in the dying light of the sun. The buildings…
